The Hot Potato of the Medical World
The human brain is perhaps one of the most sophisticated organs in the body, allowing human beings to develop intelligence, dynamically interact with the world and aid in understanding our being on this earth. Although this may sound abstract, today’s University of Saint Joseph-held talk by Francisco Botelho was a concise overview of the medical world’s understanding of human brain plasticity.
Brain plasticity, in short, refers to the brain’s ability to experience change in reaction to certain conditions and changes in the atmosphere. Brain Plasticity is a hot topic in the world of medicine, especially in Botelho’s field of work thanks to the significance of the world’s understanding of the phenomenon. He covered major questions that included the meaning of plasticity as well as its importance and measurability and went on to explain the medical world’s efforts to restore brain plasticity in hopes to sustain the brain’s efficient functionality.
Continuing, Botelho offered an intriguing insight into the world of neuron-interaction and gave all present a basic understanding of brain plasticity, or in other words, the brain’s ability to experience change.
Botelho completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Portugal and Britain, and served as the University of Saint Joseph’s Psychology Program Coordinator until 2007 when he departed to Hong Kong in pursuit of a PhD in Neurophysiology. His work in the brain regeneration field did not go unnoticed by the international medical community and he was awarded with the prestigious Youth Investigator Award from the Seventh International Symposium on Healthy Aging following his groundbreaking presentation on the effects of brain-derived neurotropic factor on the vestibular-mediated spatial orientation in rats.
